well i decided to go for the 2.8, the lil 2.2 just didnt have enough for highway SUV driving. and she needs need main seals and belts and clutch so with me doing all that work i figured i would just do it all on an engine that would meet my desires a little better. i should have some pics up soon , i bought a half cut off someone who had it imported, i believe they still have a 3.1 intercooled for sale if you are interested... i am doing maintenance on the engine first to swap into my trooper, and have done the rear main seal, new clutch kit, front main, cam seal, water pump, timing belt. am going to do thermostat, glow plugs, and valves today but need the gasket # for the valve cover gasket so i can cross reference something that may work locally. or can i just use black RTV silicone gasket maker if i cant find a real gasket?? so that is that, any help or ideas would be appreciated, i know there are others who have done this and am looking forward to joining your ranks soon!

I'll try to get you the VC part number tomorrow (it's at home). I just did the valves on my 4JG2 which I used a 4JB1 gasket for. It's just a rubber 'o-ring' type deal, so you may be able to re-use the original. Mine was pinched/cut, so I was lucky I bought the new one.
In return, could you tell me what PN you used for the rear main seal?
Great choice of motor. You'll be happy with that over the 2.2. The 2.8 will fit in the first gen body better than the 3.1. I had to do some extra work to fit the 3.1 in my first gen.

for the rear i have part number 894214-9130, front 8-97049-145-0. i used OEM seal for rear and NAPA for front and cam shaft seals. also, i managed to break the tip off of the #4 glow plug in the head this morning while trying to install a glow plug that was manufactured incorrectly. damn. any idea how to get it out without having to remove the whole head? its wedged in pretty well, damn.

The valve cover gasket PN I have is 897349416. I think that actually translates to 8973494160. I think they just left off the trailing zero on my reciept that I read it off of. I didn't have a source for the number, so just ordered one for from a local marine shop. The guy I talked to has been very helpful and checked both the 4JB1 and 4JG2 numbers he could find in his catalog and came up with that which is, as he said, common to both. It was slightly different than the one I pulled out of mine, but worked just fine. The difference was that the original had 'moulded' curves where there was extra bends in the cover and the new one didn't have moulded portions there. That was no problem. Not sure if the moulded portions was fromt the factory originally, or if it just set from being on the motor for 15 years.
Thanks for the seal numbers. Sorry I don't have a suggestion of how to get the glow plug out. I'm new-ish to diesels, so haven't run into that one. Hope you can get it out without pulling the head. Ping Jerry?

thanks for the number, although i looked on the OEM isuzu website and it doesnt come up as anything. how much was the gakset from a marine dealer? there is a bobcat service place here i could probably order one from. as for the glow plug, i think ill try to cap it off for now and see if the compression will blow it out over time. at least that is what has been suggested so far and it seems like a better way to go that to remove the head entirely...

The gasket was just over $20. The Bobcat dealer seems like a good option. I wasn't aware they used Isuzu motors, good to know.
For my education, if you allow the glow plug to blow out the remaining bit of the glow plug, when that happens, won't you lose compression in that cyl? Also, won't you then get dirt sucked in on the intake stroke? I'm new to the diesel world, I had assumed they fit in the head analogous to a spark plug in the petrol world.

bobcat used the 4jb1 in the 843 and 853 skidsteer, early models. as for the glow plug, i need to fiddle with it some more, i dont want to leave it in there-its just was some folks suggested. if i were to cap it with a short bolt, i imagine that would solve the loss of compression and dirt entering, anyways. mind sharing the contact info for the marine place you got the gasket from?

http://www.klassenengine.com/ (the Seattle store) is who I bought the gasket from. I think it was Jim I spoke with, but not 100% sure. I'll try to check my notes when I get home. They've been super helpful. Paul

before the swap ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P6090054.jpg) c223t out ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P6180059.jpg) 4jb1tc out ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P4240086.jpg) new timing belt, water pump, thermostat, front main, rear main, cam seal, clutch- did i miss anything? ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P4240084.jpg) oh yeah, valves done ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P6180062.jpg) ok, now fuel cutoff solenoid, tach, therm, oil pressure, all wired in with 1/2 4jb1 harness, 1/2 c223t. ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P6230001.jpg) back of 4jb1 injection pump, whats up with the top solenoid? it looks like it governs the return line? what should i do with it? ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P6230006.jpg) and these wires, 2 from the CS device at accelerator spring, and then the black n blue from pump... ![[Linked Image]](http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l63/bellavesus/4jb1%20swap/th_P6230005.jpg) thanks for looking! i also lengthened the alt hookups since they were too short, next is to install the hydraulic clutch from the donor vehicle and also lengthen the PS hoses to reach since the pump is on the opposite side kinda like the alt. then cut a hole in the hood for the intercooler to fit...i also found an inexpensive supply of oil filters. LF3528 didnt need to get a valve gasket, reused the old one. front main and cam seal came from napa, rear main from isuzu, water pump and clutch from overseas along with glow plugs and timing belt. i have the controller for this glow system, i just havent looked at the wiring differences. i just finished a 4d55 to 4d56 swap, and splicing in that controller to the old system was time consuming to say the least. will the c223ts stock system even activate these plugs in the 4jb1t? any advice or speculation much appreciated.
