Newest top-shift gear driven T-case? #942759 04/29/09 06:00 PM

Hey guys

I was wondering what the latest model year Toyotas are that came with the RF1A gear driven T-cases. The the FAQ section it states 1979-1991, but on the Marlin site it seems to indicate that these cases came behind the 4 cylinder up to 1995. I take it the FAQ section on this site was written around 1991 and therefore did not include the years following that, right? Also, would the dimensions for all these RF1A's be the same from year to year? Seems like on the Marlin site it says some are taller than others.

Reason I ask is becuase I am on my second set of dual 1980 T-cases, and the set I have now has a very bad vibration, so I was hoping to change the 1980 cases with something a bit newer, like 1990's cases. I lifted my T-cases so have almost no room between the top of the cases and the floor, and as such the cases would have to have the same dimentions.

So, can someone please confirm this for me: Which model years and are they the same dimentions?

Thanks
Gary

OK, thanks Greg. I looked at the FAQ section and thought that it might be outdated. The FAQ section does not mention the Forward shift gear driven cases, but you've cleared it up for me. I also see in the FAQ section that it wouldn't be to hard to do the conversion to top shift.

Does anyone perhaps know if these newer cases ('90 and up) has the same dimensions as the older 1980 cases. I read on Marlin's site in the T-case bible that some cases are referred to as tall. Is the overall case taller, or is it just the bottom half (from the in and output flanges to the drain plug)?

I have a fairly bad vibration coming from one or both of my dual cases. Does anyone want to speculate what the likely cause of that might be? Would it be the Marlin adapter that is going or the T-case bearings?

Thanks for the help

Actually it does mention it. It says 80-95 for forward shift and 79-91 for top shift. Do the math and yoiu can see that it's forward shift only for 92-95.
As for your issue, i have no idea, i've got a v6. Going out on a limb it's bearings and general worn-out-ness of being 30 years old. I remember they were having issues awhile back mixing old and new parts, and the tolerances were off (because of the wear) causing issues (might have been All-Pro, or AA, i forget) but wear is definately an issue.

OK, thanks Greg. Don't know how I could have missed that, but yes sure enough it's right there. I'm going out wheeling with a large group of Toyotas this weekend, so I'm sure I'd be able to get some measurements of the different T-case styles and see if anything would be a bolt-on replacement for my '80's cases.

In the past they used to not recommend the 3.0L chain drive cases for a dual setup, but that opinion changed and they now make the adapter for this. Does anyone have some opinions on the chain drive case vs. gear drive in terms of strengh and reliability. Only reasons I'm considering the change is because of the slightly lower ratio (2.57) and them being newer an quiter, but the mods required to make the changes may not be worthwile esp. if I suffer strength issues.

Honestly i dont think you'd have a problem with it with a 22re. Maybe with a v8, but not a 22re. There are so many of them living behind supercharged 3.4's with absolutely zero issues, i dont see how a measly little 22re could break one. I'm going to be running mine behind a s/c'd 3.4 and im not even worrying about it. I believe the newest one you can pick up that will work for you, is out of a 98 t100.

Thanks Greg. I will look into the T100 case. Just FYI, this is actually for my 3.4L Tacoma, but I posted in this section because my question related to the older truck t-cases.

(however, im guessing you have a SAS with passenger side drop, so it wont work).
