Hi all

I had decided to rebuild my own tranny, so I went web-surfing to find bearings, seals, and syncros. After getting quoted $330 to $360 for kits, I ran across alltransmission.com.

They are supposedly wholesale only, but they shipped the kit to me for $220. Same part number as the other guys.

I'll let you know how the rebuild goes as I get into it.

Outie

:p

They would be nice, wouldn't they?

I'll try, but I usually start a project without any planning and forget about all the nice things that would make the job go easier and be helpful in the future.

Things like pictures, labels, not throwing away parts I need, not throwing parts in the washer with parts from another car...

I'm not looking to dive into this for a month or so either. Too much landscaping and such to do for Mommy.

Time being as tight as it is for me lately, I decided to change the gear-box oil to see how that worked out for me.

I had some GL4 for one of my other cars, so I pumped that in and added a bottle of friction modifier.

The difference was amazing. I used to have to double-clutch, coax, plead, and I'd still get some grinding in any shifts into 2nd and 3rd. Now, just a light hand on the lever will actuate the shift.

And the PO was really proud that he had put in a synthetic.

Wrong type of any lube can shift badly. My experience has been for all around performance (cold and hot weather) the correct synthetic lube will out perform standard gear oil.

And as you now know the correct regular lube will outperform the wrong synthetic.

Glad you were able to improve your shifting. I'm curious what you used for an additive?

Just curious, but which 'model' V5MT1?

I followed instructions from the guys that rebuilt my new tranny last month and used 10-30 synthetic motor oil (Mobile 1, green cap) - no additives. Mine now shifts nice and smooth, too. I had the same problems with 2nd and 3rd shifts. Hopefully it's (mine) still the same in 8 months.

Something the shop pointed out was to make sure the clutch was adjusted correct and bled well. They said not having the adjustment correct and clutch cylinder well/correctly bled contributes to the above problem. Changing the oil/adding modifiers will help a lot sometimes and people will think the problem is solved but the clutch still isn't disengaging quite completely and that will contribute to quicker wear on the 2nd and 3rd syncros - especially 2nd gear.

Anyway, thought I'd pass that little tidbit on. That's my task for the weekend. As well as taking the bottom four bolts out of the transmission to transfer case adapter and putting RTV on them like I was supposed to when I put everything together a couple weeks ago. You wouldn't think they'd leak that bad.... Sigh.

ES_97Sport, it's the original gearbox. So a -1.

And the modifier was good-old Pennzoil Synchromesh.

I'll verify the clutch adjustment, etc.

I had never heard of a friction modifyer for a manual tranny: that makes more sense, basicly you mixed two gear lubes.

From what I have read Pennzoil Synchromesh seems to work very well (Pennzoils equivilant of GM 12345577).

Good stuff,

Kevin

There was for one of the V5MT1s. The '1' used paper lined syncro rings and required an additive. They switched to the the same syncro type my T-5 uses with the '3' and no longer recommended the modifier. Leastwise, that's what I was told.

On the additive , I read the TSB on Alldatapro at the P. Library. I can't remember for sure but I think it being for all V5MT1-1 thru 1-3.
I ran all GM synchro for 5 years. Then GL5 w "equatorc"(sp) for a year, yikes!
Very recently : 2 quarts RedLine syn. 79-80,,,1/2 quart Pennzoil synchromesh,,,1 pint stalube 80-90 GL4.
My trans is the first really bad one, truck built in 88. It has white paint on the fill plug , which means it went in on the semi recall and had that kit they used for mine . They have another kit for the 90-90.

It seem real thin,,,when I grind the gears there sharp clash noise. It shift better when I've had a dose of cafine. Still slow on 1 to 2nd, I usually shift slow , and click it to 3rd without releasing clutch ,,then to 2nd. Works real smooth that way.
