I just finnished re-rebuilding my 1991 pickup with the 22re.
I had a speed shop build my engine. Balanced, blue printed, new head you know the works. I did buy a cam, EPN 268? .425, from
www.engnbldr.com .I bought a set of Doug Thourly headers from Summit Racing and put 2 1/4" exhaust through a 24" glass pack.
The engine ran very well for 35,000 miles and then it blew the head gasket between #3 and #4 cylinder.
The engine over heated so bad it took the temper out of the rings. You could bend the rings from #4 into an "S" with out breaking the rings.
I called Ted and he helped me through this the cheapest way possible. New rod bearings, rings and a new RV head and of course a new timing chain and tentioner.
Okay I decided to get the RV head, but don't tell my wife.
I can not believe the difference the RV head made.
I can turn 4200rpm in 5 gear pretty easily. The engine has about 1700 miles on it so I haven't pushed it too hard. I'm pretty sure it will turn 5,000rpm in 5th if I pushed it.
4100rpm is 94mph according to my GPS. So were looking at a 105 mph 4x4 pickup. This pickup will lug down to 500rpm and keep going. I claim that at 1500rpm I can rotate the earth.
Before the head I could feel a real power surge at 3,000rpm now it's smooth even power to 4,000rpm. At 5,000rpm the cam is basicly finnisned making power.
I drove a 3.0 4x4 last week and it wasn't even close to my little 22re.
Better gas milage, a lot more power this may be the perfect setup and I have
www.engnbldr.com to thank.
