I've broken a few but it has always been the cage, the cv joint itself. I thought maybe I had broken the hub this time but this is what I found.

For now, I just put it back together. I can live with 3 wheel drive for the next couple of weeks.

I need to pull the whole front end and swap a couple of new boots in as well. I might as well do it all at the same time. Front Axle

Nice break, Steve.

IIRC, you've had hub problems before? Was it with that axle? I wonder if you stressed it enough to start a riser around that blind hole and it finally let go.

No, never had a hub problem. I suspected the hub because it wasn't making the broken cage noises. That may be an original axle . . . 197,000 miles. If it wasn't an original, it was a used replacement that was an OEM, so it was someone's original.

Dave Harness broke one in that manner at the Badlands a few years ago. I'd say his was definitely repetitive stress because it barely made a noise when it let go... almost sounded like someone drop a quarter on a concrete floor. Good thing for the front locker so you can stay in the game until a repair is more convenient.

What a beauty! Love your hands smile

That's the same way my first CV broke at the Golden Crack. I sheared mine off farther in around the bearings and only until I had it completely apart did we find the trouble, the outer cage was also grenaded. We are the few and the proud!

Hmmm, can't say I ever expected a CV to break there...guess that's one more thing to look out for.

Missed you in Moab, Steve!

My hands love you too Desha!!

I need to get you and Molly out here to swap in a new axle for me

Moab hasn't been in the stars for the last couple of years. I have commitments for an event here is So Cal. I was on site last weekend and the event is over Memorial Day Weekend. In fact the broken axle was done on a prerun for this event.

38th Annual High Desert Round-Up

My broken axle wasn't the worst that happened that weekend. We had a Suzuki do 4-5 rolls and eject the driver. He was air flighted out with a couple of cracked vertebrae.

Two lessons from this accident:

1) Stock seat belt are lacking. If he had of had at least an aftermarket lap belt, he would have stayed in the vehicle would probably just have been bruised up. He hurt his back when he landed after being ejected.

2) Don't provide treatment to an injury beyond your training. When I arrived on scene, people were getting ready to move the guy to meet the ambulance. I told to leave him where he was and let EMS come to us. Let EMS move the victim. Simple First Aid training says to not move the victim unless the scene is unsafe. There was no danger, he just was in pain. We were able to contact EMS and lead them to the site. At that point "we" transported the victim, on a Jeep, to the helicopter but this was after he was secured to a stretcher(?) with a neck brace etc.

I'll post a picture of the Sami later tonight.

Steve
