Yesterday I had an extra set of AA's in my pocket for my digital camera along with some spare change. I reached in and was greeted by a burning hot Quarter. Quickly tossed the contents of my pocket to the ground, and the 2 AA's had flipped opposite directions, and apparently with the help of the hot quarter completing the circut, had melted down and fused themselves together!

It's a good thing the kindergardener's who I was chaperoning on the trip were on the other side of the park at the time, or they may have gone home from the field trip with a whole new vocabulary

Now isn't there a warning on the package about this exact thing?

Nope, fortunately they were just plain Akaline Copper Tops. I hadn't used the camera in awhile, and all my recharchables were dead. Thing is, this 'method' of carrying the spares is something I've done a hundred times before, but believe me, won't be doing again!

I've done that before! I think it was a 9v battery though!

You are thinking Lithium Polymer. They don't so much explode as violently combust in a chain reaction.

SHIZA!!! That's not something you'd want happening in a pouch hanging beside your junk.

I know the 3 volt lithum batteries like you use in the Surefire flashlights can have issues, even just you two different batteries, where one is just discharged more than the other. They sometimes spontanously combust.

Speaking of lithum camera batteries, I use the lithum AA batteries and while they are expensive, they are the best thing ever. They're light and they last FOREVER!! Hundreds more shots than any standard or rechargable battery and I just dug an old AA camera out of the drawer that I haven't looked at in at least 2 or 3 years and the thing still works with the original lithum batteries inside. Amazing stuff.

Anyway, I've gone completely away from rechargables and to the lithiums, but I keep them in plastic storage containers that are designed the store each battery seperately.
