I removed the engine from my 92 Montero the other day to do a full rebuild. It's got 185k miles, a rod knock and what I'd guess is a collapsed/failed HLA (or 2, or 5..)

Anyway, it's going to get a rebuild. Are there any tips or tricks to improving the engine? I saw in a post below that some of the engines (I think it was about a 3.5l 24v) can use the HLAs from a later Diamante or something.

I am planning a stock rebuild, but if there are later parts that are an improvement and don't take lots of specialty machining, I'd be in for trying them.

Thanks!

When you replace the lifters (HLAs), use only the 3.0L 12v SOHC lifters on that engine. They all now have a 3mm or so hole instead of the original 1mm hole.
