All, I've been a lurker here for sometime waiting to find a truck that I like. I found an 88 4Runner with some minor rust, 300k+ miles w/rebuilt engine (50k ago), and automatic tranny (replaced some # of miles ago). Fairly clean for the mileage and I think I can get it for around $1k. The only problem with it that I am aware of is that it want shift into 4 lo. Goes into 4 high without a problem and seems to run just fine. Any ideas what the problem with it might be and how much it would typically cost to fix?
This vehicle has been sitting for the past couple of years with minimal driving.
TIA,
Chris

When you say, "won't shift into 4 lo", will teh stick just not physically move into teh position, or is it that it goes, but will not engage?
IIRC the engagement in this tranny (I have the same truck) is solenoid operated, so if the solenoid were bad, I'd guess you could pop it in but it would do nothing....

I haven't gotten to actually try it myself, but I'm told it physically won't shift into 4 lo. I've been told that to shift into 4 lo you have to be in either park or neutral. If this is true, the guy may just not know how to shift into lo. Assuming this is not the case, what type of problems would keep it fron physically shifting to 4 lo?
I hope to actually see and drive it soon.

Assuming this is not the case, what type of problems would keep it fron physically shifting to 4 lo? He did a body lift, and didn't clearance the sheetmetal on the tunnel. Stick is hitting the body metal, or metal frame of the shift boot cover.

Staceman,
No lift of any kind. My understanding is that it hasn't been used offroad much, if at all. He may just not know how to put it into 4 lo. Are the rules different for putting it in 4 hi vs. 4 lo?

I've been told that to shift into 4 lo you have to be in either park or neutral. Sounds normal for an automatic.

Me too. Gotta be not moving, in neutral or park. Even says so on the vehicle tags and the owner's manual.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to check it out on Saturday and see if I can get it to shift. As I said in the original post, the tranny was replaced. Come to find out, the transfer case was replaced when the tranny was (original t-case was working fine). He still has the old tranny and t-case to go along with the vehicle. If I can get it to shift into 4 lo and I decide to buy it, I will have an extra working t-case to go with it. Reckon what I could do with that?
