Have been driving a Mitsu Pajero until now and have just about decided to purchase the Patriot Sport. Can anyone give me the pro and cons of this auto?

The "pro" is it's a jeep!

I have seen reports giving it good crash test ratings. Body style is similar to the Cherokee models and does offer reasonable cargo capacity for the size.

The 2.0 is supposed to get good fuel economy.

Then my early morning blur is correct....

I thought it was a rear drive. It does have a variable something or other term for the transmission.

It is a new design and has good and bad words floating around. It appears to be liked for off-road capabilities.

Just from looking at eBay.... I see new ones for $23,600. and a used 2008 model with 7,000 miles for $13,000.. In this day of high used car prices I'd think folks don't like that model very well. It is a front wheel drive vehicle, which I wouldn't purchase for my family under any conditions...Rear drive only for me. But if you don't mind a front wheel drive vehicle, and the price is right for you, go for it.

The Patriot drive system is basically a FWD, and if you get the optional off-road package, it has AWD, with an extra low first gear (CVT trans). The automatic is contantly variable ratio, which takes some getting used to. It improves the efficiency of the powertrain by keeping the engine in it's optimal RPM range. If you floorboard the throttle, the RPM goes to the max HP range, and stays there!, the vehicle will accellerate, but the RPM stays the same! A normal accelleration, usually the RPM will go to about the peak torque range, and stay there. Torque converter lockup comes on around 15 miles per hour! Many new vehicles are going to this type CVT trans, especially the Japanese vehicles since the trans is made by Jatco. When I was a dealership mechanic, I never saw a problem with this unit.

A manual trans is available, too. Six speed if I remember right.

The 2.0l CRD diesel is only available in Europe, and other export markets, not in North America. I'm not sure who makes it for Chrysler, maybe Mercedes?

Hope this helps!

The one I am looking at is with the manual 6 speed with the off-road package. It does have good milage converted is about 60 miles for 1 1/2 gallons combined city and highway. From what I was told the diesel is a VW that has been useed for several years here without a problem.

I did not know the 2.0 CRD ia only available here. Thanks for the info. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />
