I tried a search on this, expecting that someone else would have had this on their Monty. I've replaced all the shocks with the factory ones, replaced upper and lower balljoints, tie rods, center link, and, idler arm twice. Wheel bearings are newer, and tight. Tire pressure is either at spec or 2 psi above it. Set the torsion bars to factory spec ride height, aligned the truck with our Hunter machine. Checked the control arm bushings for wear, didn't find any play yet. AND, still get a cupped tire wear pattern after about 15/20K total time mounted on the front, with me on the second set of Yokohamas that I've run with on this Monty since 2003. Any thoughts on what I might be missing? Happens only to the fronts, and I'm rotating the tires between 7/10K. Yeah, I probably should be doing them sooner, but you know how your truck is always the last one to worked on in your family

As you've stated, I'd rotate them more frequently, but....

What specs did you align it to?

Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

I used the factory specs out of the Service Manual, our Hunter is in agreement with them. I was cupping tires before I aligned the vehicle, I replaced the front shocks that I knew were past their prime, I was so sure they were also the cause of my cupping wear. Replaced all 4 tires at the same time. Now here I am again, not quite as bad as before, but still a nagging issue. Is anyone else getting cupping wear on their Gen 2 Monteros?

Check your lower ball joints for wear/play...may as well look at the uppers too.

re: alignment...I always set my camber to 0 and have no problems. I also rotate my tires every time I change my oil. That may be overkill, but my tires last a lot longer

EDIT - forget what I said about ball joints. I missed that the first time

Well. looking at your Monty, you're running bigger tires than me,and lifted as well. Maybe I'll trying backing the Camber to 0 like you're running. The stock spec isn't much, it's close to 0 compared to other vehicles on the road.

Yes, just a bit. I haven't heard from anyone else getting this cupping of their front tires on stock truck, so I'm still expecting to find some part of the front suspension at fault on my Montero. I have heard from other Yokohama tire owners with different vehicles that their Yoko's tend to cup wear as well. Maybe it's a Yoko thing and not my truck's fault.

Have you checked the free play in the steering box? It's easy if you have a dial indicator. Might be worth a try. Mine was out of spec and adjusting it made quite a big difference in the steering

Sounds like control arm bushings.

Cupping isn't typically caused by JUST miss-alignment. BTW, you can still get cupping with brand new stock shocks if they're not able to control heavy aftermarket tire/rim combination.

Once they start cupping...
