Now I have the basic Garmin unit with no mapping, just waypoints and "bread crumbs". I would like to purchase something that would have the BLM/USFS/etc. roads listed and be self contained (I don't think a laptop would be up to some of the rough terrain) without spending $400+ on a Garmin Colorado. I am kind of new with the mapping. Check the sponsor link through Tiger GPS for their prices. You can get topo map support for the Garmin. Another unit that I like better than Colorado is the Oregon. However, more $$$$ For a fully self-contained with high quality topos, my favorite is the Lowrance Baja 540. It is pricey and hard mount. Overall, the Garmin 76 is portable and you can add topo support for a reasonable price.
