Hello Gents:
Did a quick search, but it seems that most of the threads related to this question are for previous years trucks (older than 1998), and I cannot find the truck's owner's manual (used to be my wife's truck, and my guess is that she tossed it our in order to acquire space for her stuff in the glove compartment...).
I'd like to know what is the AT fluid I'd have to use to replace the one I have in the tranny (1998 Montero). Is the oil change recommendable? Wouldn't it affect the performance? I ask, since I haven't had to touch (repair) the tranny in 12 years I've had her.
Thanks for the feedback.
Jorge

Sorry for the late reply. I answered you on the other forum but in case you didn't see my reply I have a 96SR and my owners manual suggest ATF Dexron II (or a newer compatible ATF).

I believe Mitsu changed the tranny in '97 (hence the 1" higher body mounts to accommodate it). I only use the Mitsu diamond SPII or III from the dealer. There have been a few discussion about this in the past so using the search function might be useful to you <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

yes, I agree, use diamond fluid only, you can't go wrong. diamond fluid plus mitsu transmission = bulletproof

Used the search, but is a pain to use, and no post indicated anything regarding 1998-specific.
Wouldn't want to pour the old stuff (and risk tranny damage)when a newer conccoction is out there.
Thanks again,
Jorge

Yes, the search is a pain. And I don't ever remember a post answering that question, anyway. I'd go with the dealer juice, too. Probably worth the premium over dexron3. ATF is just full of detergents, since the tight tolerances of the valve body are very sensitive to gum. These detergents get used up over time. Change the fluid, clean the filter, and count on many, many more happy miles. Resist any recommendation to flush it. Too risky.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

Chrysler replaced the Diamond SP III fluid with ATF +4 about a year ago, for their versions of Mitsubishi vehicles. If you can't get the factory stuff ATF +4 is a bit easier to find at parts stores.
