As far as it being not as tough, I beg to differ. Timing chain versus belts, just to start. But everyone has an opinion I guess. sorry, I have not personally experienced the 2.8 and was basing my opinion entirely on information from someone else. He did say however, that it is much more driveable for everyday purposes. good luck.

I test drove the white&silver 1993 Pajero at Max Overdrive and it was falling apart. It drove fine but all the interior was loose and falling apart. He was asking top dollar for the truck despite its short comings. Oil leaks, loose suspension under hard braking.
I found another 1993 Pajero at Silk Road Auto in Surrey and it was the 2.8L version. What a difference! Everything was tight, not leaking any fluids. The body is in great shape with a couple scratches on the bumper trim. I bought it on the spot and have only had to replace the alt belts. It needed a new steering idler arm and an alignment. The tires were way out of balance.
When you go for a test drive check to make sure the engine is cold on startup, as in it hasn't been warmed up prvious. Have the hood open so you can here the glow plug relays kick in and out. Have a listen while it's cranking over. Once it starts see how much smoke there is.
Mine starts pretty good in the morning and runs great. Burns no oil and gets great mileage. I'm extremely happy with it.

I wish I could afford a 2.8. That being said, I feel I know my truck pretty good now and that 2.5 just keeps pulling me around without issue. No oil burning, enough power with the manual, no weird noises, and I have a few tricks that I think are going to help get a bit more out of it. We will see, maybe thats just my jealousy talking

Wait, I meant to say that if I didn't need the room for my two mutts, I would have also picked up a shorty. Im a big fan of the 2 doors but at the same time, I love my suspension seats and not sure I could go back now. Sorry, I forgot what I was going to say on the previous post and got side tracked with the 2.8 debate.

Ouchy hahaha. Although I didn't know that and have never seen one for sale, I still needed the room for the pooches.

Yeah, Marty is a great guy to deal with when buying the cars. What ever he told me about the car, its condition, etc. was true and he gave me exactly what I asked for, eventhough it took about two month to find what I wanted in the auctions in Japan.
Marty does get busy though, and for service I had to take mine to CVI automotive because I kind of needed immediate service.
