still on the same tank of gas for almost 1.5 years now...dont drive the Montero much.
I thought I would fire up the AC because that is recommended to keep the seals lubed. It was blowing warm air. Must be a leak, I have bubbles in the site glass. Also, it is either cloudy or the the glass is dirty. I have a very little R12 but I dont know if that is really what's in there. Could be 134. How to tell?
I pulled the MAF it to knock the dust out. The temperture sensor is about 1K low...oh well. So I put it back on and whattya know the thing wont start. I chased it down to the three wire connection to the power transistor. Bad green corrosion. Mine has never had the clip that holds it on.
I am going to examine the radiator/ cooling system when I get time....and alternator bearing sounds funny...

dont listen to anything anyone says about r134 in an r12 system. just vent whatever is in there and refill with r134. it would be even better if you could replace your reciever dryer and vac the system down. also get a can of the leak dectector stuff and squirt it in as well. they normally come with a uv light and you can run it for a day and then check for leaks with the light. i promise you no matter what anyone says the two freons wont hurt each other. again i promise you they wont. its just old wives tales. im sure someone will chime in and say im a moron and all that because some people on here are just like that. john

just vent whatever is in there and refill with r134. I work at a HVAC shop and "vent" is a good term for what most people do. And it sounds oh so technical

im sure someone will chime in and say im a moron and all that because some people on here are just like that. Can't think who that might be I think I'm correct in saying that R134 absorbs more heat than R12 and so if your R12 designed condenser is too small for R134 that might mean it won't blow as cold. I think that the conversion is successful though, most of the time

My truck blows ice cubes. It's 134 converted with a GM compressor on it.

im sure someone will chime in and say im a moron and all that because some people on here are just like that. john Not here we all look out for each other No, if you mix them they will gel and ruin the compressor and other components. Also, the oil that is used in the r12 system is not compatable with r134a and will not flow thru the system properly causing the clutch on the compressor to not disengage. If you decide to retro fit your vehicle your need to replace compressor, orfice tube, condensor, the fittings and the evaporator, so pretty much all the components and the system need to be evacuated and vacuumed so there will not be any moisture or air in the system.

Mine blows Ice cold with 134 in it. The only thing I replaced is the receiver/dryer and put adapter fittings on the compressor. I did not "Vent" the R12 though... I had access to a reclaimer and a vacuum pump at work so I removed the old and pulled a vacuum on my system before I put in the 134. But, I am kind of the tree hugger type

When I got my Monte, it blew hot air, I looked for R12, found it but they wanted too much $$ for an experiment. I put in a can of 134 and it worked for a week, I put in some "high millage/sealer and topped off with regular 134. I held up for about a month of blowing cold and leaked down, I topped it off 2 more times and it has been fine for over a year. However, once the outside temp go's over 85, you can't count on it being cold. When it's not blazing hot outside, I'm pretty sure I could keep icecream frozen infront of the vents. Still have to check the fan oil, that may help me...just don't have time to wrench.
