I've posted about this before, and am still searching for an answer.

My Trooper, the '89 with a 2.6 engine, has a rattle which I cannot find. The rattle is underneath, and most noticeable on smaller bumps. It sounds most like a piece loose in a metal drum. I have searched the underside of the Trooper time and time again, and can find nothing to account for this. It doesn't seem to affect the way the Trooper drives or runs. It does both quite well.

Several years ago I did a clutch job, replacing parts, resurfacing, and other necessary things while I had the transmission off.

What are the chances that there is something loose in the bellhousing? Could a nut or a bolt, for instance, have come loose and be bouncing around in there? Is there room for that to happen? What's the likelihood?

Anyone care to venture a diagnosis and/or a prognosis? Thanks to all.

Roll Me Over
There is a heat shield mounted on the bottom of the body above the muffler. I would vote for that.

The other thing that comes to mind is the catalytic converter. When they start failing they often rattle.

I sometimes use a rubber mallet to help find rattles.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I had an odd rattle in my Trooper. It only happened over small bumps and sharp pot holes. It turned out to be loose front axels. The snap rings that hold the axel in place had...snaped and the axels were dangling loose in the hubs.

Its and easy check, either pull the outer cover of your hubs off and check the snap ring, or climb under the Troop and push/pull the front axel and see if you can pull the sucker out. Just my .02ó

I agree with the axle noise. The superwinch hubs on my '96 rattle like crazy. Their design allows for some play on the axle even when the snap ring is on. They rattle like crazy over small bumps.

The cats on the first gen troopers were full of little balls, unlike a more modern honeycomb style. these balls can rattle and make noise as well.

1987 trooper LS.'94 3.2, SAS,35's , lots of dents and rust. Now, improved, with more dents.
1995 trooper LS. Wife won't let me improve this one.
1996 trooper. I'll need something to modify when the '87 finally rusts away.

Hve you checked your carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft? If the rubber finally gives up it wil allow the DS to flop around causing a noise.
