I think my local jeep dealer is giving me the shaft,is there an alternate way to get these parts other than through him.I broke what I believe is a knock sensor, just above the oil pan in the block, drivers side.Errant wrench while installing the exhaust manifold. He quoted me over 125.00 for this, sound a bit steep? Thanks in advance,Ernie

Sounds about right. Sensors are not cheap.

For simple stuff like that, I always start at Napa/Autozone/Online. The knock senor is a tuned crystal that sends out an AC signal when the block vibrates at the right frequency (that of knocking). Depending on what crystal and process they decided to use, it can be really cheap or really expensive.

It will usually run fine without the sensor. (Assuming you have a '87-'90 XJ/MJ) You might find one at a local pick-your-part and save alot of $ if you notice that it's pinging!

I appreciate the education on this subject.I only separated the black cover from the plug that goes into the block so a little grey rtv inside and I should be ok.I did ring it out with a meter and its open between the leads, did not checkthe plug end for power or does this generate its own. Also thanks for reminding me to check the bone yards, good idea.Ernie

The plug is a passive sensor, it only looks for voltage it does not supply it. I'm not sure what the ohm spec for that part is, the book might say.

The Renix knock sensor is a Piezo-electric voltage generating device. You need to connect a A/C voltmeter to it, then tap on it with a screwdriver to see if it generates a small voltage.
