89 had an lsd rear diff. Check for orange label on door jamb for diff lube warning. Some 89's had a lockup torque converter. Check for R in the tranny code on the dside of the tranny. Worth having. You can see the lockup on the tach at about 42mph as about a 2-300rpm drop. On level or downhill gentle accel (you have to get into o/d early) it feels like an additional shift.

Let it get hot and idle it for 5 minutes. If the valve stem seals are leaking, you will see oil smoke on a throttle blip.

So, Halfbreed, What is the word on your choice. Did you ever get a Monte? What have you done? How do you enjoy it?


WANTED: 1989-1991 Isuzu Trooper or Mitsubishi Montero, V6, Manual 5-speed, 4 door, Stock, Good looking in and out, runner/driver good. PM w/ info please.

Outta the box the Montero is definatly the heavier built. But I have had both. the Monty 4dr monty is taller inside than isuzu. Both are good.
