Confused about rear diff fluid type... #960401 08/24/09 06:33 PM

I want to change the rear diff fluid in my '98 Montero and I'm confused about which fluid type to use. AllData says this:

Conventional Differential
API classification GL-5 or higher

Limited-slip differential
Mitsubishi Genuine Gear Oil Part No. 8149630EX or equivalent

I have the factory air locker with the manual on/off button in the center console. Is this considered the "Conventional Differential"? I hope so, because I'm already picturing the puzzled look the and ridiculous price the dealer will give me if I have to ask for "Part No. 8149630EX or equivalent"

I don't believe the locker calls for an LSD (friction modifier) additive. I believe 8149630EX is gear oil plus this additive already added but I'd wait to hear back from other's who change their own fluids.

Air locker only requires GL-5 gear oil. The friction modifier is only needed with the Limited Slip differential.

Thanks for confirming - I'll happily go with the GL-5!

The additive is a friction modifier, so you don't get judder in tight turns with an lsd. No need for a locker, since there aren't clutches automatically applied in a corner...
