Just plan on replacing all of those upper gaskets. You'll need upper plenum gasket, o-rings for injectors (unless your cleaning comes with them), crush gasket for fuel line banjo bolt (might as well, its cheap), and egr valve gasket. The egr gasket will usually look fine, but at $1.90 its worth it; I didn't and about 6 months later I spent hours tracking down a rough idle just to find it was that gasket after all.
Also, while you have that upper plenum off might as well inspect the wiring harness (and injector splices) if it hasn't been done before. Additionally that upper intake piece is off so spray out all the little vacuum connections with cleaner to make sure none are plugged up. If you have the time I'd say take off the throttle body and give it a good inspection/cleaning, however that would mean you also need that gasket too.

x 2 on soldering those injector splices. Get the Toyota o-rings for reinstalling. Make 'em wet with FUEL before install. Mark which injector is which (1,2,3,4), so you know which ones match up with the flow rates. This is also a good time to send in the cold start injector, as well; nuther gasket. This is for a 3.0, but still similar: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/30_V6/throttle_body/Don't overdo it with the cleaning spray on the t'body. as Suba suggests for a little preventative maintenance.

Can you tell me what the details are on the 'splices' ? I am assuming they are close to the connectors? do I take the splices apart? or just clean them up, then solder? Anyone ever take a pic of these things? Is there a discrete piece of shrink insulation over them.. a big bulge or something indicationg where they are?

Thanks. What exactly did you search on? I tried but came up empty. Wow. Darin... A blast from the past. Hope he is doing well. He helped me with quite a few issues years back. One of the people I miss. He was EB's fishing buddy IIRC. I am going to check out those wires but my symptoms seem to not be typical for bad connector issues. Update on my hot soak start issue... my tailpipe and plugs are looking like I may be running rich. I don't know what that would point to...adding it to the start issue.
