Getting the Wheeling Fever
Check the transmission shift detent cable before assuming the transmission is bad. I've seen 3 Gen I automatics recently with the trans cable jacket pulled out of the crimp. Slide the rubber sleeve back near where the cable ties into the throttle body linkage. When it slips out, the transmission will shift erratically, with typically very late, neck snapping upshifts. It's not fun to change it(drop the pan and remove the valve body), but a replacement is only about $50.

Can't say that I know much about the 4 cyl. I bought an '89-V6 from my father-in-law for $75 last year. It had 229,000 miles on it. The only thing that doesn't work is the rear window defroster. I put about 3000 miles on it & the oil pressure started to fade. I dropped in a new long block & drive it every chance I get.The V6 has power to spare, it has never let me down. I've gotten out of every tight spot I've ever been in w/ it.(That's more than I can say for my '95 Silverodo Z71)I wish I could find another 1 just like it.Good luck w/ your research.... I believe what ever you chose you will like the outcome.

Even in the mountains I still don't have to wind out the motor up steep hills, I call do almost all at 3k rpm.

I own 3 rigs with the 4g54 motor and one with the 6G72
24 valve. The 6G72 gets better mileage and has more power
than the NA 2.6L. Turbos I know nothing about. I like
my diesel 4D55 best for the torque and gas mileage.

We need to get the PNW / PDX group together.... Seems like there are quite a few of us.

I can host. When is a good time?

Body Damage is Cool
Mine has 2.6 auto and works great. The thing had the overdrive relay out, and I don't know how long he drove it around without OD, but the engine is still great. The only problem is the #3 cylinder burns a bit of oil. I'm on the hunt for another 2.6 to rebuild while I drive on this on.

Someone always asks that.. damnit <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" /> I live in Fl I use my raider in NC.
The manual definitely helps! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> I don't think you could drive steep roads with a automatic 2.6l with those weenie brakes! I've had my close calls <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> 4-wheel brake skids around switchback in fun! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" /> Guess thats why ABS was invented <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
