I changed the oil in my '85 22re yesterday, and noticed the oil filter was as clean as the day I installed it. The oil from the crankcase was black and the inside of the filter was almost dry and clean. Is there a ball check valve or something not allowing oil into the filter?

Bad relief valve?

Is the relief valve located in the engine block behind the housing where the filter screws on? I checked my FSM, and did a search here and Pirate. I couldn't find anything about the dry filter or a relief valve. I have good oil pressure but I am concerned about the filter not getting any oil run through it.

The relief valve is part of the oil pump on the front of the block, pax side on top. You'll see a hex plug there; that's where the relief valve lives.

If it's a Toyota filter, it also has a drain back, so you might think it's dry; does it smell like oil?

Also, if going by the stock gauge for oil pressure, remove one of the little 8mm plugs near your oil filter, install a pressure gauge, and see what you get for a pressure reading.

OK I remember seeing that plug when I installed the oil pump a few years ago. I don't know what to look for after I take the plug out. Anyone have a break down of whats inside?

Don't good-quality oil filters have check valves in them so as to allow some oil to stay within and not drain out between starts? All in an effort to avoid dry startups?
