I was able to get a Condensor, fan, Receiver straight off a rig, so it was sealed up. The place I got them from cautioned against reusing the Receiver because of contamination.
Anyway, I got everything for the price of a new receiver $50. I'm going to take their advice and get a new Receiver.
Does anyone know/have a write up on tips/tricks or cautions when dealing with the A/C. It seems simple enough, but looks like mistakes can cost $$, so I want to avoid them.
- Is there a way to decon the used A/C parts - I'm pretty sure the 'freon' is out...how do I make SURE - Once together....is there anyway I can check for leaks? is there a DIY dye I can add? - After it is all together, I plan on having it converted from freon. Can I do this myself now since the freon is out?

Thx...just what I was looking for, but no the answer I wanted =(....looks like it really isn't a DIY job. I like how he says "if you are reading article, you don't know enough...".

When you removed the ac components from the donor, was the freon still charged?
If not, the system has a leak.
Assuming you have a R12 system, what I would do is buy the R12 to 134 kit, for $40. (Walmart is usually cheapest) It comes with the adapters for the fittings, a pressure gauge, and 2 cans of freon. I would suggest you substitue one of those cans for one with UV dye mixed in. Those are about $12. Charge it up, and you should have working A/C. Use it for a week or 2, and then go rent a UV kit from Autozone, which will be a UV light and glasses, and check for leaks. Fix the leaks and then re-charge.
Worst case scenario is you buy the $40 recharge kit and it wont blow cold air. But you might get lucky and everything works fine. Could even be a slow leak and you have to charge the system every year.

Hey Adam, Now, that is the answer I wanted to hear =)....However that article posted mentioned the R12 oils don't mix well with the R134 and needed to be cleaned out.....also I remember reading some where that if you don't clean it out right it could mess up the compressor or other a/c parts. though. No freon...everything from the condensor back was gone.

R12 oil is a mineral oil base I believe and 134 is a synthetic.
So you have to drain and flush the entire system of the old oil before changing over .

You should pull a vacuum on the system to remove the debris and moisture/air from the system. You can tell if you have a leak before dumping refrigerant into a leaky system. Not only is venting refrigerant illegal, it is wasteful.

I have been through this on a copouple of my cars, including the 4Runner.
Re: DYI or not, the biggest problem is that you need to be able to evactuate the system of the current R12 and contain it, then take it for recycling.. and also have the capability of drawing a good strong vacuum for a sustained maount of time. Neither of these are trivial tasks.
If you're wanting to keep teh costs low yet "do it right", I'd call around some local shops and see if you can find a place that will just evacuate the system for you, then let you take it home... then once you have done all the swapping, take it back to them for drawing the vacuum.
The better magic question though is - why are you needin gto do this? Has something failed? Has a leak been fixed?

The better magic question though is - why are you needin gto do this? Has something failed? Has a leak been fixed? This why: yup the top edge of the bumper sliced into the receiver and cut off the tube on the DS of the condensor and crushed the fan. I was able to get the condensor, receiver and fan from a local yard. I watched them disconnect it. Per their advice, I'm going to get a new reciever. Putting it together seems pretty simple....My main concern is removing the R12 oil and any other contaminants and making sure there are not leaks before I recharge it with R134....This is the part I'm not sure I can do on my own.
