I have a 1997 Kia Sportage 2WD. All has been fine till it was worked on last time. Now Sportage seems to have NO Power. It runs smooth and is not missing. I started looking around and the knock sensor wire is cut. I have no idea how this happend but everything points to the last person who worked on it. Would a sportage seem to be down on HP (like half) because knock sensor is not hooked up (cut) ?

I assume a CEL was set with a knock sensor code?

Without knock sensor data the ECM will go into "limp mode" and not allow timing advance which will cut power.

1998 Sportage - Gone.
2004 Honda Civic Coupe.
2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara - She got it.

Thanks Axe Man. Wire was broken as well is the plastic on the sensor (I guess it was just old not cut) and check engine light was on. I replaced the knock sensor, not fun, and truck still has no power. The guy at AutoZone told me codes were knock sensor (fixed) and EGR.

I'm not sure what to do now. I have had this thing apart to check the following:
Compression is good on all cylinders
Timing belt is spot on
Both Coil Packs fire
Pulled fuel rail and all looked good fuel is clean as
Injector inlet screens are clean.

The truck idles normal but when you try to free rev the engine it is not crisp, it's lazy and will only pull 4.5K RPM. When you drive it you can drive normal with 1/4 throttle but when you floor it you hear lots of intake noise but it's slow to respond and feels like it only has 30HP.

I'm open to any and all tests just out of ideas. Thanks Jon.

Check and see if you have a plugged catalytic converter, more than likely it's the first one.

We have a winner. I pulled the nuts on the converter to make a air gap and most of the power is back. I will take it to the muffler shop and have it replaced. Thanks Jon!
