mainly because of the detergants in new trans fluid. the clutches wear and if you havent changed the fluid on a regular basis they will wear faster and sludge will build up on them. if you put new fluid in it removes that sludge and can cause the trans to slip and smoetimes leak. now this only applies to a trans that has not been serviced on a regular basis. if your changing it on schedule the clutches wont wear as much and there will be a lot less sludge build up. So you are saying that that sludge accumulates on the face of the frictions disks? And if this sludge is removed the clutches performance will be worse? I thought that the clutches engages better if the fluid has somewhere to go and thatÆs why the linings are porous ( that way the oil film can be squeezed out. I would think that clogged pores would make the disks harder to engage and slip more.

My Owners Manual says "Dexron II" ?
I guess I don't need the Diamond ATF

Les, Dex II has been supeceded by Dex III. I would strongly caution against using standard trans fluid. At the very least I would recommend using Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc. It's a synthetic that meets SP III specs. I used it for several years before switching to Diamond SP from the dealer. For me, it's about the same price at $4.87 per qt.

I totally agree... I've now put many miles on my '92 SR, and drained and refilled the trans multiple times to keep the fluid at top operation condition. My trans still works great, in all honesty, I've never seen automatics that hold their tolerances like our units over all these miles and years. I use nothing but the Diamond fluid from my dealer.

I see no reason why you couldn't use it. Follow my logic, our trans is essentially the Aisin-Warner 4 that Jeep used in the baby Chero, albeit beefier and not-quite-so-prone to breakage. If you haven't had issues, it should be fine. But, I'd still check the price against the Mitsu fluid. If it's not that much difference, then....

I respect the recco from the AW guys, and they specced mitsu juice, and how often do you have to change it? Cheap peace of mind.

It's just interesting that is says Dex II instead of Diamond ATF. I'll go with the Diamond, like you said the cost difference is not that great.

Just looked at my manual and it says Dexron II also, but I would expect that as it's an 1998 like yours. I respect the recco from the AW guys, and they specced mitsu juice, and how often do you have to change it? Cheap peace of mind. Mitsubishi sells the Diamond ATF but tells us to use Dexron II in our trucks. So are the AW guys (whoever they are) smarter than the engineers that design the truck? I'll stick to what they specify, of coarse that's the engineer part of me speaking.
