Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm considering buying a 92 lwb montero. the current owner says it runs and drives but has a intermittent knock he thinks it comming from the bottom end but it been my experiance that lower end knocks dont come and go. is there a common problem with these motors that might be an easy fix? He only wants 350 for it.

I know w/ the 2.4s in the MMs the hydraulic lifters occasionally sound like a knock.

older v6's had hydraulic lifters that have small oil passages and if they get sticky one might flatten every now and then especially on cold mornings. I think i've known 3 trucks that did this, the bigger lifters came in '98 i think. For the price if the truck is otherwise in good condition buy it and put a motor in it or do a rebuild.

ok so i test drove this montero today the knock comes at about 1000rpm then goes away its seems to run fine but it has the oil light on under 1000 rpm. the idle seems to move around as well, is there an IAC valve on these. the guy said is blew a head gasket and they replaced it. there is no water in the oil. i notice that the lower pulley seems to be moving around a little so maybe the knock is comming from that. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't buy it unless you at least plan on replacing the oil pump. Theres no guarantee the knock will stop either. If the price were right, I would consider it.

EDIT- Just saw the price... I think I would grab it. Its worth that in parts. The lower pulley moving around like that may be the balancer getting ready to fly.

Does the motor have to come out to replace rod and main bearings and the oil pump?

Oil pump.... Im not sure but the rod and mains I myself would think it was easier with it out.
