Why does my Paj hate me? #965471 09/28/09 04:01 PM

Well... I'm not worried about my leaking vacuum pump any more... I can't keep oil in my 4D55 long enough for it to leak.

Something "went" on my way to Osoyoss last week. On our way out of town the truck started puking smoke. Luckily we were only on the edge of town so I was able to go pick up the Frontier and drive it.

Not one to worry, and the Paj would never let me down...

I decided to take the truck to Mosse Mountain a few days later... More smoke. At first I was hoping this was a fuel issue, but based on the oily smell of the smoke and it's grey-ish colour I'm thinking it's not fuel. A buddy of mine saw the Paj drive by, he said the smoke trail was about a full km in length.I decided to check the oil level.

I'm burning about a litre of oil for every 100km that I drive. Not bad eh?

I parked the truck last Tuesday and havent' looked at it since. (I'm a little mad at it). I think I'm ready to start figuring out if I need a new turbo or a new head gasket.

So.. what now? What are some easy diagnoses to do prior to ripping the thing apart and loosing my temper? I need to check my coolent level, to see if I'm burning it too, and to see if there is oil floating in it.
I need to pull off the intake hose to see if oil is pooring out of my turbo.
My guess is turbo, but who knows.

I was all ready to sell my Frontier, and become a Mitsu only man, but now... now that the Paj is sitting in my parking space dripping it's life blood on my floor... well... I'm loosing my patients.

I bought the Paj to be my wheeling truck. It's now been on two camping trips, two wheeling trips and a couple play days... Would an ARB bumper and a lift on my Frontier be cheaper?

Maurie

So oil is leaking onto your floor??? Or is it just getting burned up in the cylinders?

If it's cylinders I say try a compression test. You can go rent a tester from most auto parts stores, if you have no oil in the coolant.

If it is leaking on your floor...maybe a blocked line, a leaky line, a turbo. I once had a VW that the pcv valve was blocked and the oil puked out of the dipstick cause of an excess of pressure in the case. Caused me all kinds of smoke problems but that was because it was puking onto the manifold haha.

You have peaked my interest. Keep us posted. And don't cave and sell the Paj. Frontiers are ok with lifts and ARB bumpers but a buddy has one and he is always having some howling issue from the back end everytime he goes off pavement. Nissan has never been able to figure it out cause it goes away on its own. And, it doesn't wheel like a Paj...Its way to comfy.

Ah... Two oil issues.

The leak is my vacume pump no sealing properly against my alternator. I've checked the lines etc. It's just the wrong "o" ring and doesn't leak under pressure, only when sitting (weird I know).

The oil burning is a sepporate issue. I will check the PCV valve though, but it's not popping dip stick. Usually a PCV valve causes a popped stick. If it's forcing oil out through the motor (rings, turbo, whatever) then it's probably a bigger issue.

I've wheeled my Frontier and it is no where nere as nice as the Pajero. The Paj, even with it's short wheel base, is smooth. It's breakover can't be beat. I love the approach angles. I rarely drag the bumper off of things and when I do I know I'm driving it hard.. ahh.. the Paj...

Then again... The Frontier has a factory locker, six forward gears, a lower T-case ration and 281 pound feet of torque... and I can buy parts with a simple phone call...

But the Paj has a snorkle, and I can go up the stairs in MC-creek with 2 wheels in the air... It clearas 33-12.50 stock... but the Fronteir has cruise...

I know what you mean about the Paj's ride. Took it on a game scouting trip through 10 km of old bush roads on the weekend with my wife who seldom goes out with me on these trips. On the way back on a local semi broken up paved county road we drive on twice a day commuting to work she told me she preferred the PAJ's ride to her 09 VW TDI on that road!

I'd start with the turbo. Tons of rebuild kits on ebay. Other than that, I'm not sure.

or I may even sell you the turbo off my other pajero if you ask nicely haha. I would jump on a compression test and/or leak-down test to see if there is anywhere else compression is going, if compression can go somewhere other than the exhaust, that makes it easy for oil to come the other way through the same place.

What do you want for your turbo? You'd get my old one of course.

Ebay is full of mitsu turbo rebuild kits as well, if that's an option.

I've checked out E-bay. They aren't too expensive either... Maybe this weekend I'll have a close look at it. If I'm fairly positive it's the hair dryer then I'll pull it off and see how hard it would be to fix.

remember after you rebuild a turbo you gotta send it away to get balanced...its a waste of time if you just slap it back in.

No idea what I want for mine...what are you willing to pay?? I don't really care if I got yours as it would obviously be useless
