Went hunting and during trip the car started to make a weird rattling like a loose chain or spun bearing along with the smell of burning gear oil. Engine oil and tranny fluids are good. Managed to drive home over 300 miles with no probs other than the smell and rattling. I have not had a chance to look at her yet.Any ideas? Is the Transfer case chain driven - slipped chain? Thanx.

Yes, it is chain driven. Other than that I know nothing about them.

Well got the new transfer case in with a mechanic buddy's help.He thinks my transfer case went due to my tires. I'm running 31x 10.50's on 15 x 8 rims. Hopefully he's wrong as I don't want to go through this expensive routine again. Any thoughts/ ideas?

did you drive it in 4wd home? if you drove on dry pavement, you will most likely damage the T/C

Excess wheelspin with the front end coming down hard can shock-load the front diff and tcase, causing the demise of both. The tcase chain tends to stretch and jump the cogs, giving a ratcheting sound that can also be deceptively similar to the front diff side/spider gears shearing teeth.

I see.....
So if we get smaller tires on then we'll be fine?

I really don't understand how tire size would be an issue I'd need to hear the logic behind it.
(Maybe the larger tires let you run your rig in more challenging places than with stock tires )
I can see how shock via bouncing around and having the tires grab after being airborne or something, might cause it to have issues over time.
If you bought your Sporty new, then you would know the history of any t-case abuse. Otherwise, the previous owner may have driven it on dry pavement some in 4 high and started some damage that you finished.
By the way, is your transfer case behind a 5 speed or automatic? What were you able to pick up a replacement for ($$$)?
Keep us posted on your findings.

the logik behinde XXXL tyres is simply more stres to the whole thrasnfer system due to weight friction e.t.c. a stress that isnt desined for like something the Dana30 that haw problems with tyres larger that 32-33 inch
