For the first time in 19 years, today I lost a piece of equipment in the sewer. $4000+ camera. I've been stuck before, but was always able to "pull the rabbit out of the hat".

Have the general location marked and with some luck I will get it back, in repairable condition, when the pipe is dug up. The pipe needs to be repaired anyway, so at least that won't cost extra.

Nothing like a moment of stupidity to put you back in your proper place.

Don't despair, sewerrat. Pull up a stool and we'll talk about it.

You cant pressurize the pipe and blow it loose? Like the old pipe pressure tests? Still do those? 8" expansion plug with a pipe fitting in the middle and a 100cfm trailer compressor.

Got the camera out today! Customer dug it up, repaired the pipe. It was caught in a section of pipe that was damaged when a waterline was installed. How the thing got past the offset joint in the first place was a one in a thousand chance. A bit of washing, and used the unit to finish the job.

Laughter is the way I handled the situation in the first place, after a bit of cussing. I must admit, you have to be one strange person to repeatedly get covered in other peoples "stuff" and come back to work the next day. It helps that the pay is good. Also no biting of finger nails, no eating things like fried chicken, and the 3 second rule for dropping food is right out!

We have a set of pressure plugs. The problem would have been blowing up all the toilets connected to the line.

The first job I ever had that paid a paycheck was for the local street and sanitation dept. It was a little fiefdom and the mayor, a friend of my father's, told them to hire me. Not the best recipe for an open arms welcome to the smart ass rich (comparatively) kid. The first day I was the underground man on a clogged up manhole, about 4' deep in "stuff", and my tools were a shovel with most of the handle amputated and a tin bucket on a rope. I was also the only man on the job. For 8 hours. And I had to ride home in the truck bed, but it solved the acceptance problem just fine... They had a goat bbq for me (we used goats on the steeps that you couldn't mow) when I went back to school in the fall. And my going away present was an amputated shovel and a tin bucket with a rope...
