Need a Spot
I've had my 85 4runner with a 22re for about a year now. Most of the time its parked but I've driven it for a week straight and it ran ok. Until it started raining yesterday... It's started doing this hesitating and sputtering and won't accelerate. It's done this ittermittently since I've had it but now it has been doing it a lot. When I floor the gas it will pick back up and drive right for a while. I've replaced the fuel pump and filter and some more stuff. I'm wondering if it might be that the distributor is getting wet??? I'm going to try to dry it out and replace the rotor button and the cap to see if that helps. Any ideas other than this? Thanks!

That's a good place to start.
While you are there, check the other end of the plug wires.
My brothers '90 pickup was doing the hesitating thing, his were showing corrosion on a couple of the plug wires connected to the plugs.

You might also check the rubber bellows sections of the air intake tubing between the air filter and the throttle body. Look for any small cracks as that can cause an air leak and symptoms like you describe.

Run the truck at night. Open the hood and watch for a spark jumping around. Found one on my 97 that was arcing on the spark plug. Replaced it and it worked great.

On my 88, I found my igniter case was leaking, and water would get in the igniter and short it out.

Get a bottle of water, and spray around on components to see what exactly triggers it.

My 85 did that. The computer got wet.
Pull the kick panel on the passenger side and see if yours got wet.
Feel the carpet around that area. The windshield frame had a little rust and the water ran down to drip on the ECU <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
