The converter on the V6 has a slighty higher torque multiplication and slips less with tall tires. 1.96 torque ratio for the 4 cyl Vs 2.06 for the V6 unit. That gets you an extra 11 or so ft lbs of tq at the back of the converter.

The V6 unit also has higher line pressure so it will shift a bit more firmly and hold more torque.

How does one determine the torque ratio for a given trans/converter (assuming stock)?

I've done some googling, but all I find is a million threads about crawl ratio...

Thanks

Does anyone have confirmation that the P code trans is not the lockup? I pulled a trans from a 90 montero and it has a P code. I have a pic of the torque converter if that helps.

Mr Zark

We dont know .. for sure .... You cant get all info on a forum .. Lots of forum info is off at times ... Not being a jurk just how the web forums are ... Hit your reman trans shops around you .. Find the pro's who fix auto trans and ask them ... Call one of the big auto trans parts sellers would know ... I can call my people on monday if it would help .. I'm a pro mechanic to pay the bills .. But not a auto trans man one of the few thing I have not really messed with .. Try that it may help...

Have a good day

Zark, I swapped in a lockup unit out of a Junk yard 91 into my 89 SWB. From what Ive found the data plate under the hood list the non-lockup as a KM-148. The Monteros with the lock-up unit use the Aisin Warner designation of AW-XX sorry I cant remember the last two digits...Also I believe there's a red colored data plate of sorts on the drivers side that has some numbers on it. If i remember right the code A44DL is the lock up unit with the last digit of L the thing your looking for in the lockup version. HTH..

Take your photo of the front of the converter and the input shaft and post it. I can tell by looking. I used to have the TSB for reading the codes off the case, not sure where I put it.

Either way the front of the converter is differant enough to tell. There is a raised ring in the front of the case where the clutch is located.
