Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 83 turbo diesel pickup. It rattles from the driveshaft when you drive with a light load on the engine. Real loud when almost lugging it. Its not the rear end (I pulled the 3rd member and checked it) and its not the U-joints. However the T-case has slop in it. If I lift the rear end up and turn driveshaft has about 1/4-3/8 play coming from T-case. Do the chains wear in these things? Whats weird is I switched t-cases when I rebuilt the trans and it has the same symptom.

The 5 speed chains do stretch and will make noise.

Also check the yoke. When they start getting loose, they'll cause all kinds of strange noises.

I have removed the driveshaft 2 months ago and checked carefully. All is tight. You can see the slop coming from the T-case. But the nly the front driveshaft is driven by the chain, right?

Is the steel bushing or the front yoke (most likely) on the tcase rear output worn, letting the front yoke wobble? May need a new front yoke for the rear dshaft.

No there isnt any side ways slop. The spline feels tight, it is clearly in the T-case. Maybe a worn counter gear?

Is this issue in 2WD or 4WD?
The output bushing on the rear shaft is the first part to wear out.

in 2wd. Its not the bushing cause the shaft is tight side to side. It's gear backlash or the chain maybe

In 2WD the transfer case is a straight through drive. The chain is stationary, there are no gears under load.
The chain only spins with the front driveshaft when in 4WD.
