Swap an Auto for a 5spd #967380 10/12/09 12:44 AM

Well, I tried a search several times with no results...I think something is wrong with search (or me).

Anyway, I have a 1989 LWB with an auto that needs a rebuild. I would rather have a 5spd than an auto anyway (and don't want to spend $2000 for a rebuild). Are there any good threads on here for a swap?

Ive seen it done quite a few MMs not a montero tho. With the MM its a lil simpler w/ the cable clutch but basically all you have to do is install the tranny. Cut a hole thru the firewall reinforce the hole so the wall doesnt flex when you press the clutch. Rig up the cable and go.

Now with the montero being a hydro clutch everythings a lil more complex.

I am just completing this swap in my '92 gen 2. I didn't take a lot of pics, but took good notes along the way. I would guess your swap would be similar to mine; both are 3.0L engines. Please ask questions. I can scan my notes if you want them.

1992 montero, cranked t-bars, OME springs, 1-1/2" spring spacers, Homemade rear bumper and roof rack, 33" BFG AT, 1" body lift, Superwinch hubs, '95 SR locking rear axle, was AT - now V5MT1-3 5spd.
