A question for the tranny builders...........
I need to fix or replace the 5-speed tran in my 88 Montero. It's got a broken gear. I bought another trans from a salvage yard, same one, but the front shaft (input) has side-to-side play. I haven't measured it yet, but it seems like maybe 1/8" total. Any idea how much play is okay? The old tran has a much smaller amount of play. Thanks for any advice.

mine had a lot of shaft play as well and the bearing was shot. I would rebuild one of them before you put it back together. I'm in the process of doing this right now and its a pain in the butt

The input bearing would be shot with that much play.

Thanks, guys. I've looked up the special tools for disassembly, and it's a lot of money. Does anyone know of a relatively inexpensive source, or maybe where I can rent?
Thanks.

You can get through these gearboxes without all the fancy tools.
