89 Montero with a 6 cyl with an automatic. It seems to shift 'hard'. I don't know if this is normal or not - there is a distinct jump between gears. It shifts much harder than our other cars but they are a town car and a MB so...

Are there any vacumn lines associated with the auto trans?

adjust the transmission cable that goes to your intake, it is probably ratcheted too tight. I forget the appropriate setting, but its pretty easy to find the sweet spot.
