Weird sound coming from my Runner. #91094 09/11/02 11:48 PM

Here is my problem:

I am getting an unusual clanking sound from underneath the front end of my 4Runner when I initially engage my brakes. It sounds like 2 pieces of metal clanking together. It is really noticeable when I am braking at a speed of 35 mph or slower. When I am at higher speeds it either doesn't do it or I can't hear it.

I haven't taken any damage to my undercarriage. There was nothing out of the ordinary in my visual inspection. I have had friends listen while I replicated the noise but nobody has any idea what it could be.

Let me know if there is any more information I can add that may be of help in figuring this out.

i have a similar noise, but only when I back up and hit the brakes. The toyota stealer says it's the brakes adjusting. I don't think so. Doesn't seem to bother anything else.

Sounds like sticky calipers or pads to me. A definite "clink" sound, though.

Check your anti-sway bar bushings.....possible that one or both are blown.

I lurk around here on occasion soaking up the knowledge that is abundant so I don't usually post much.

However this problem sounds alot like the the problem I had with my 2000 runner. I had it in to one dealer and they couldn't figure it out so they waid it was normal. I drove around like that for months and it drove me nuts. So I decided to try another dealer and they fixed it under warranty. They replaced the "front pads and shim kit". Problem solved.

I hope yours is as easy.

I know that one. This is a clanking that really (don't want to say definately) sounds metal on metal. My first instinct said "brakes" but I am not smart enough on them to make that determination.

Bighead,

The sound mine was making seems alot like you describe. You should try to get it fixed under warranty like I did. If you don;t want to fix under warranty or the dealer balks at replacing a normal wear item (brakes) you could replace the pads and shim kit yourself. It seems like a pretty cheap fix.
