I think this might be one of the least asked question....where can i find a good quiet muffler for the 22re?
I've been using one of those $50 muffler from napa which last about 3 winters time only. Mine is starting to rust itself out again....It was setup without a tail pipe. (would this contribute to the accelerated condensation or exhaust flow?)
There is a $40 Cherry Bomb Turbo muffler at a local store near by, should I?
Any suggestion?

The cherry bomb isn't exactly quiet, but not as bad as a Flowmaster They key is keeping your foot out of the gas.
Honestly, quietest will probably be an OE replacement....

Aside from an OEM muffler, you might look into something in stainless steel to last longer. I have an old Borla s/s muffler I plan on swapping into my '85. I used to run it on my VW and it was fairly quiet.

I just told my muffler guy I wanted an oem style and he put on an aluminized turbo muffler that has held up well (except for the time I let my 14 yr old son drive us into deep water at the dunes. When I got it restarted it blew the seams out).

I added a Dough Thorley Tri-y and did not see it's full potential till I went 2 1/4 all the way back with a Magnaflow (Strait through design). It was too noisy but I like the performance. Got tired of the noise and went to the local shop and got new exhaust that looks just like OEM. Much much quieter. Problem is I now have that same "sock in the mouth" feel that I opened the exhaust up to relieve in the first place. Important to note here: I have stage 2 cam, OS stainless valves, beehive springs and a medium port on a 20R/22R hybrid. It seems to me that the shop that did the work exacerbated this effect by making bends that make the pipe smaller.
When I have money to do it again, I think I am going to add a high flow cat and return to the Magnaflow. It is my understanding that the cat will act as a resonator and make it quieter than with just the Magnaflow.

I think I am going to add a high flow cat Don't fall for the "high flow" cat hype. Google "high flow catalytic converter myth" and you'll find plenty of info. Pretty much all cats are "high flow" (honeycomb vs. bead type) these days.

I also have the Tri-Y header with a head and cam from http://www.engnbldr.com/.I made my own Cat-Back from a 24" Flow Master glass pack. I used 6- 2 1/4 45 degree bends and the noise is just about right. After the exhaust leaves the glass pack it makes 5 turns and that keeps it pretty quite unless I'm really reving it up. Just running around town or poking along a trail it's very quite.

Yup....here is my current exhaust setup... -Stock 22re/manifold/downpipe -Aftermarket cat -2.25" pipe after cat -2" muffler -2.25" tail pipe (Please mind my roadside repair from last week...<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/notooth.gif" alt="" />) I have a choice between cherry bomb & Walker, same price. Which one to go with? Cherry bomb Turbo 87703, 2" in/out ![[Linked Image]](http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l37/allochris/01%20Truck%20Pics/DSCF7145.jpg)

I had the Cherry Bomb. it wasn't quiet, but I really liked the sound. unfortunately, I didn't have it properly hung, only clamped at the IN & OUT, and it ended up breaking the weld around the rear tube. went with a Magnaflow after that. too loud for my taste. then a Flowmaster 50 Series Deltaflow. juuust right. still now "quiet" though

So I finally ended up installing the cherry bomb after all. Surprisingly it sounds exactly as loud as the previous napa generic muffler. But since I didn't have a tailpipe before, the bass was indeed louder. I like it now when I don't have to yell conversing in the cab with the tailpipe on.
I welded the in/out pipe of the muffler this time. If I want to avoid breaking the muffler factory weld around the tubes over time, how am I supposed to "properly" hang the muffler up?
