It has been a long time guys. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

The old dog needs a front end rebuild. These parts are not a problem to locate.

However, I searched and ran across the HOW LONG WILL WE BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN OUR RIGS thread and I have a part that is not found through the local parts people.

Vehicle speed sensor for the 4L30E. I searched and found where Jerry mentioned this tranny having 2 of them. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

I was wondering if any of you would have input on the below problem and where to locate the part.

The issue: When the truck is cold (less than operating temp) the tranny will inconsistantly go into limp mode on the 1 to 2 shift. Sometimes on the up shift and mostly on the down shift.

I am regularly getting the code for VSS and thought this was the issue.
I do NOT always get the code when this happens. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I love the old Troop and will continue to try to repair as needed...until we run out of parts. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Thanks in advance,

1jackleg

Body Damage is Cool
Here's some good tranny info from the Transtec site, I expect if you do a search you might find more:

BTW the mode switch on the side of the tranny has been known to cause a lot of strange problems so you might consider looking at that.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
"THE V6 ,S ONLY HAVE ONE ACTUALL SPEED SENSOR ,IT IS THE SAME AS NO 1 SENSOR AND IT IS IN THE SPEEDO HEAD , AND HAS AN OUPUT SIGNAL OF 4 PULSES PER CABLE REVOLUTION, THIS SIGNAL IS USED BY THE CRUISE CONTROL AND THE ECM BUT IT HAS TO GO THRU THE SPD SENDSOR NO 2 WHICH IS THE UNIT MOUNTED UNDER THE LEFT DASH AND IT PROCESS THE SIGNAL SO THE ECM CAN MANAGE IT THE INPUT SIGNAL IS A BRN WIRE NOT THE YELLOW , THE YEL ON THE NO 2 SEN IS THE POWER LEAD , AND THE OUTPUT IS THE WHT WIRE WHICH IS THE BUFFERED SIGNAL , ALL IT DOES IS SMOOTH OUT THE SIGNAL PULSES ,, ALSO THE BRN WIRE ON NO 2 IS THE SAME AS THE OUTPUT FOR THE SPEEDO SW NO 1 IT WILL BE EASIER TO HOOK RIGHT UP TO THE NO 2 SENSOR , THE SENSOR NO1 IS NOTHING BUT A REED SWITCH THAT IS TRIPPED BY A MAGNET BEING ROTATED BY THE DRIVE ASSY IN THE SPEEDO HEAD , BRN WIRE INPUT SIGNAL WHT WIRE OUTPUT SIGNAL AT THE SENSOR OR BUFFER AS IT MAY BE CALLED , YOU CAN TELL IF SENSOR 1 IS WORKING BY TAKING AN OHMETER AND HOOKING IT ACROSS THE BRN WIRE AND GROUND AND SPINNING ON OF THE REAR TIRES JUST ENOUGH TO MAKE THE DRIVESHAFT TURN , IT WILL GO, ON OFF ON OFF , AS THE DRIVE SHAFT IS TURNED , , NOW TAKE A VOLTMETE AND GO TO THE WHT WIRE ON THE NO2 SEN AND SET IT TO ABOUT 5-6 VOLT DC TURN THE KET ON AND SPIN THE TIRE AGAIN AND THE VOLTAGE SHOULD FLUCTUATE A LITTLE BIT FROM WHATEVER IT IS READING... I went back 7 years and found this pearl from Jerry.

Need a Spot
Thanks had it fixed today by replacing the two top connectors and the shift shaft seal seals, looks like it isn't leaking anymore.

I can't seem to find the two bushings that are midpoint under the chassis. They look like a large bushing with a bolt through the middle connecting a couple of eyelets.

I want to replace all the bushings eventually but here in California not a lot of available sources that recognize descriptions. Downloaded a repair manual but it doesn't give parts numbers.

Getting about 15 mpg over all right now on Chevron Supreme
