Wheeler
Well the old horn doesn't work from steering wheel contacts. Fuse is good. Hazard lights work. Horn works when wired directly from battery..lol. Contacts on wheel switch are good from continuity testing. What else could it be other than broke wire or corrosion. I can put a horn button on dash to pass insp. But would like to keep original. I have an extra horn assembly for steering wheel and it doesn't work. ??????

Might check the wire connection under the steering wheel and the contact ring and wiper there. Will have to pull wheel to do this. How? 24mm socket (typically), loosen and back off nut so a few threads remain engaged, then pull the wheel sharply towards you. The nut will keep you from getting a face full of steering wheel when it lets go.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Been there, fixed that.

Got a .22 pistol? Know a buddy that does? Get a hull and slip it over the worn down contact on the spring that runs on the contact ring 4crawler mentioned. That's all that is wrong. The contact has gotten too short to touch the ring anymore. Fixed my '89 that way.

Body Damage is Cool
I just fixed mine the other day. The spring-loaded pin that contacts the ring under the steering wheel had worn down too far.

I replaced the pin. Part number is: 84312-20011 PLATE, HORN CONTACT ('86 4Runner SR5)

It was inexpensive from Toyota (around $6.50). Should last longer than the 22 shell solution...

You might want to inspect the ring too before going to the dealer in case that is worn through too.

If you have an Auto Zone near you, they have a steering wheel puller in their loaner tool selection. That is what I used. Roger's approach sounds good too. The wheel isn't on that tight.

Need a Spot
A buddy rented a wheel puller, so I'll fix mine this weekend.

Can't you just shim the plate up with some washers?

It would be nice to have a horn like that!
