The front pass side carpet is soaked with coolant Coolant seems to be dropping from the port/opening where the arrow points which is directly behind the center console. I'm guessing the heater hoses on the inside of the firewall? Any other possibilities? So I have to remove the all the junk in front of it? Sounds like fun

Any wise words would be greatly appreciated. At least I know where my coolant leak is now.

not sure about your montero, but when coolant has leaked in my rigs, it's always been the heater core. the hoses are in the engine bay, so no hoses are inside. the core is like a small radiator.

my heater core had a crack in it before. pretty easy to do on the Gen1, no idea about the Gen2. My biggest concern would be disarming those airbags before getting too far into it.

Not sure why they must build the car around the heater core .. Then a few cars its four screws and its out .. Strange ..Some Ford Rangers are cake..Then they give a Mustang thats just a "root canal" to get the heater core out ..

Can't help on a 97 never done one ..

Sorry once more

Body Damage is Cool
If you can pull the carpet out and rinse the anti-freeze out of it. You'll appreciate it next summer.

so no hoses are inside.

You're right. I had another look at the FSM and the solid pipes go through the firewall. Guess I'll have to hunt for a core.

I wonder if the core off that diesel gen2 that torquemaster is parting out is the same PN. It's MN188337 for mine.

Man, I looked at the fsm, and it's a biotch. You have to take everything out from the firewall back to the seats, but I don't think you have to take out the a/c evaporator, so you don't have to drain the refrigerant. Another argument for a gen1, where you can remove the heater core by cutting one hard pipe, from the dside footwell.
