I let folks smoke in my truck and I don't even smoke........Just crack the window and blow it out.

The rule is, when in my truck anything goes as long as it's fun.

I do the same Chris and like you don't smoke, if I did I would have to go back to work.

Have you ever noticed that Japanese cars will retain that "new car smell" forever? What is the deal with that?

I have had no luck removing smoke smell from American made cars...and I have never noticed smoke smell in a Japanese car

Body Damage is Cool
I've successfully used the coffee grounds method with one twist..
I put them in a pie tin on top of a couple little pieces of 2x4, and lit the grounds on fire. Close the car up tite, and let 'er fill with smoke. That smoke will get rid of the cigarette smell.

Great ideas here! I like the charcoal briquet one - I have bags and bags of the stuff since I switched to a gas grill.

I have had pretty good luck sprinkling "Odor Eater" on dry carpets and dry seats. "Odor Eater" is a foot/wet boot powder that is made of baking soda and some anti-bacterial stuff. A very light sprinkling followed by "working it in" with a brush does the trick. Don't put it on anything damp or wet.

You guys make this way too complicated.

A spray bottle filled with white vinegar will remove almost all traces of any odor. Just spray the carpet, seats and headliner, run the heat on medium and spray a continual mist into the cowl vents, then do it again on cold. Open the windows and let it dry. Repeat if needed.

If you are going to clean the seats and carpet (probably a good idea anyway), give it the vinegar treatment afterward, rather than before.

For really bad smoker cars, my wife has had a great deal of success simply placing a bowl full of white vinegar inside the car and closing it up for a couple days.

Need a Spot
Earlier this year I purchased a 2004 Chevy Colorado from a dealer here in town as my "Plain Jane" everyday truck. (I keep my toy's for the weekends) This truck had been smoked in since it was new. The dealer was having trouble selling it because of the smoke smell. He knocked a grand off his price and had the interior "De-Ionized. (washed with de-ionized water which is supposed to absorb the offensive odor molecules). It did a good enough job that I bought the truck.
However, after about a month the smell started to come back whenever the A/C was blowing. I bought a spray bottle of Febreeze and with the A/C blower on Hi and recirculate, I would spray it into the interior heater air intake under the dash. I did this once or twice a day for 2 weeks and now the smoke smell is gone.
So however you decide to attack this problem, make sure you take care of the heater/ AC ystem as well or the smell will keep coming back.
