Getting for my gear change and front axle rebuild and was interested in the pro's/con's of a birfield eliminator kit vs hardened birfield's/axles when running a locker in front. It seems like the price will be about the same for either (app $400). Any help out there?
Thanks

If you are going to spend the money, I'd run upgraded birfields. Better turning radius, IIRC.

With 33" tires, you are good with stock axle shafts and birfields. I always was. 2 years of wheeling on 35" tires, each of my birfields had a crack. Noticed doing maintenance. I've always had a lock-rite locker in the front. I have since upgraded, using stock axle shafts, (I always take spares), and Longfield 27 spline (stock spline) birfields. Mabe if I go 39" or taller tires, I will go 30 spline all the way, but I don't see that for a long time.

Thanks to all, longfields and new axles it is. I'd rather upgrade while it's all apart and save a trail breakdown. We wheel all winter long here (often alone) and the Cascades can get really lonely (last Monday we saw zero vehicles all day). The run included miles of low/low running at 3500-4000 rpm with chains on both ends. The turn arounds when the trail is blocked (lots of falling trees in the winter)can be pretty hairy.

This is what they look like when they let go. This kit was a much higher quality then the one that is offered by Randys. It took almost five years to blow it but when it went it took out more then the kit. The shock load took out the PS u-joint along with the hub and R&P. ![[Linked Image]](http://pics.montypics.com/oops/2009-12-19/1261279545_broken_redline__1_.jpg)

NICE. my wife said theirs went bang bang.. one side then the other, one right after the other. then of course with the elimiatiors... no spares.
backing up in a ravine where you were all most pulling a reverse wheelie.
