So I got me this new fangled job that I'll be moving to in a couple of months in upstate New York by Saratoga Springs. Now I've been told by some that there is little wheeling in upstate due to laws/land availability. On the other hand, I've also been told the Adirondacks have a lot of places to go wheeling....
So, Does anybody around here know of good wheeling in upstate New York?

Good for you Sunder.. One caution though.. Take lots and lots of bug repellant. The black flies, mosquitos and a tiny little fellow called a noseeum will eat a feller alive up there. I had the fortune (good or bad) of spending 4 summers in the adiorndacks as a young man.. All I remember is snow flakes at any day in the summer and them damn bugs. You might check the New England Association of 4WD Clubs: http://www.nea4wd.org/There are some places on private land that are open to clubs or by invitation.

You know I've been think of all the good things. The bugs never even crossed my mind... I wonder If i could put bug repellent in front of my blower motor and just run it on cold/defrost...
John, does new england 4x4 run in upstate, or am I going to be trailing to a lot of places? Sorry, I haven't had the time to look them up yet.

They cover some of the eastern part of New York. They are more into trail ride opportunities.
I have had past dealing with Scot Hatch (don't know if he is still president) and he is (or was) very active and committed to 4x4 recreation in the northeast.
All I can say is contact them and see what they offer in the way of access to 4x4 opportunities.

Welcome to NY!!! there are or is a western MA jeep club, dont recall the name. I know they run some trails on or around the mohawk trail..which is part of RT2. Around the city of north adams. They have done a jeep jamboree in the past. Also i have seen signs on jeeps for a cny jeep club recently, i think its cnyjeep.org or something like that. as for being near the adirondacks its a beautiful place just watch out for the bears, you'll have to buy a sled(snowmobile) its huge out there. and be prepared for all the salt they use for the roads in the winter..talk about rust!

Where's about are you tcoff?
I've been thinkin about the salt... I bet in the winter when it needs to be salted If I run outside with a hose and clean off the jeep, I'd just be makin icicles.
How do you combat salt?

Sunder You don't! If you drive them roads your ride will ROT away.. It'll just be a matter of time and then you will be driving another Jeep. Big JIm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

The only way to try to combat the problem is to frequently run your vehicle through an automatic car wash during the winter, especially after salt has been put on the road after it has snowed. Investigate your local car washes. Almost all of them recycle their water and use it again, but some of them don't. And of the ones that do, some of them have better filters than others. The worst ones will just put salt back on your vehicle, but the better ones really help, particularly with modern cars. On the older ones, like CJs, it's a crapshoot.

You don't have to DRIVE in the crap..all you have to do is visit a carwash and you will get plenty of salt right there? HA! Seems thee is no way to not have a rotting Jeep.
