Once a couple years back I was driving a friend to the doctor in Stockton(San Jooaqin county)from Calaveras county and the state had an emission control pullover with highway patrol waving over vehicles to put up on a ramp and jam the wand up your exhaust.I pulled over and told the tech I'm not taking no smog test as I reside and my 87 Mighty max is reistered in Calaveras county where no bi-annual smog is required. They gave me some crap but let me back out of the line. This was a voluntary deal on Hiway 88,near I-5.

Russell, You really need to get out of California... Except for a rain forest and coral beach, what doesn't California have that I enjoy. If there was similar work/pay outside the state right now, who knows? For now, though the California is messed up... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Back to Clay's thread:

I would say get it running right and then you might not need the new cat to pass. The o2 is one thing that would not hurt to have anyway but you will eventually want to get it running right and then have the money invested in the new cat that you might not have needed to spend.
I do think a new cat could get you a passing grade but again if its not running right it will probably be taking life out of that new cat. I also know how bad you want to get it up and legal to drive around though too. I just went through that with my 88, too bad I have to sell it.
