Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've replaced the vacuum hubs on the front of my '98 Sportage with Warn manual hubs. Do you have to reverse the vehicle to get the transfer case to unlock from driving the front hubs?

I ask because sometimes when I shift from 4WD to 2WD, the green 4WD indicator light on the dash doesn't go out. If I put the vehicle in reverse and back up a few feet, the light goes out.

With the snow we've gotten on the east coast, I've needed 4WD to get out of our neighborhood, then when I reach roads that have been cleared, after coming to a stop I shift the transfer case to 2wd but don't get out to unlock the hubs as I know that in a few miles I'll be back on roads that arn't cleared and I'll need to shift back to 4WD (after coming to a stop).

On a side note, if I shift the transfer case to 2WD, and get out and unlock the front hubs, I don't need to reverse the vehicle for any distance to get the hubs to unlock from the front axles, correct?

Sometimes it takes a while for the green light on the dash to go out after shifting from 4H to 2H. No need to back up. The light will eventually go out. And you can be assured that as soon as you put the transfer case back into 2H the system is no longer in 4 wheel drive.

And there is no need to reverse after unlocking the hubs.

Thanks, Axe.

That's what I thought but then when the light wouldn't go out immediately after shifting to 2wD I started second guessing myself.

Body Damage is Cool
The reverse was to unlock the hubs, not the t-case. My light stays on the a while also, no worries.
