Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have been told it could have a ford or sbc configuration.

Is there an engine that will bolt right up to the trans hsg and eng mounts? I did a search but found no help.

Does the 304 have potential?

I want to make a power house gas guzzler out of it!! (for the children) ;>)

Body Damage is Cool
Any of the AMC V-8's will bolt right up, even the accessories. This includes 304, 360, 390, and 401. With any Ford, Mopar, or Chevy small block you'll have to do some modifications

1977 CJ-7, fiberglass body, AMC 360 w/ headers, DUI ignition, Edelbrock intake and Holley 4150 carb, TF999, Dana 300, 4.56 gears lockers, York air comp, 4" susp lift, 2" body lift, BFG 35" M-T tires, Megashifter, AGR pump & box, REP8000 winch.

For more power I would install a mild 401, (or at least a 360 AMC), it won't cost much more than going through the 304, especially if you build it for power, and as stated, it will bolt right in! The mild 401 would be more reliable and make more bottom end torque than a built 304 with the same horsepower. Note that the 401 is balanced differently than the 304, so be sure the flywheel is made for a 401, or have the 304 unit rebalanced. The vibration damper is different, too.

If you want to go for max power, the 401 would be way ahead of the 304 (and 360) as a starting point. The stock crank and connecting rods are forged, instead of cast, and the block is alot beefier.

Here's a good source for AMC parts:

As above.. BUT the 304 can give them a thrill as it is. Make sure of your gearing and tire size before thinking of an engine swap.
