So I am wondering if a 12v cummins out of an early 90's dodge fit inside my 91 yj? Or would the mods be too extensive?

I think you would find it a very tight fit. And, the transmission would be rather long for the YJ wheelbase.

The weight would be an issue, too. A 4 cylinder Cummins might be better fit, but it would still be almost twice the weight of a 4.0l!

Yeah as soon as I was done posting this I did some research and I think I'm going to go with a 4bt or 4bta with an NV4500 and full width dana 44s front and rear. Any random things I should know or advice on surprises that arise when doing these swaps?

Just make sure it's smog legal in your state before you do it, it's not in CA.

Best of luck finding a 4bt. I'm looking for one now, they havent made em for anything since irrigation wells since 03 due to EPA regulations.
If you do find one there generally rather expensive. Take a look on ebay, you can find the occoasional deal on there but, I'm not 100% certain I wanna dump 4000 just to get a motor.
