heard today on the radio when aluminum wheels get way cold they are more likely to lose the air seal and leak down..heard this on the radio,,they say steel wheels are better in zero temperatures.......
anyone have a plan to keep snow from packing in the engine compartment when it is really deep and kia is not lifted.
i saw a guy that put plastic under his hood and down in front of his grill and below bumper when t he snow was real deep.

I had alloy in WA with cold weather and I usually lost a few pounds immediately.....
The steel are less expensive but cost you in fuel (I think)?
A guy in Michigan was making plates for the bottoms, but I forgot his name?

Wow, never had a problem and Utah winters get cold, I just check the air when I change the oil. Every once and a while I have to add air but I have never related it to cold weather.

Tires loose some air pressure in the cold weather naturaly. Cold shrinks. I think.

Lived with cold weather for 38 years now, and even at the -51 i was in a few weeks back i've never had an air leak. For an alloy rim to get cold enough to shrink to the point it shrinks and causes air loss you'd be looking at the -180 to -200 range. the biggest concern i have in cold weather is the tire freezing, creating a flat spot where it was parked.

It amazes me you guys live in that weather. Burr doesn't seem to do it justice.

I put steelies on my Runner, the only one I have with AL rims, mostly because if I wind up leaving the road unintentionally, a messed up rim replacement won't be so expensive. I also don't have to wait around a tire shop at seasonal changeover.
Tires do go a tad flat in cold weather, but it's not something you're going to see until it's about -20F or colder.
Iron, up here we call 'em Flintstone tires; ya just bounce down the road about a mile until they warm up.
What sux up here at -50 is if someone's dayem dog comes along and pees on your tire. Warm pee WILL break your bead.
