The real savings is on the cheap insurance for these trucks. The mileage is not great but the most expensive part of ownership is depreciation followed by insurance costs. I pay less than $20 per month to insure my 84 Monty with new engine, new trans, new brakes. Even with $5000 invested, the depreciation on a new RAV4 is $5000 once you drive it off the lot, you will have "paid" for the truck inside of 2 years. I voted to keep it.

wahh?? I'm getting $2600 for liabilty on my 88 2.6/5spd...I'm a teen driver though. You would think the price would go down when you drive a $700 suv compared to a 60k BMW...

"The vote is 10 - 4 to keep it... you Guys are as crazy as I am... "
You should add that those 4 who voted "no" are just buzzards wanting the parts.

I recently went through this dilema. So... I bought my daughter a 4cyl commuter that gets 32 mpg and kept the Raider for myself.

Final Vote 19 - 7 to Keep it and fix it up. My Daughter couldn't be happier with the decision. The truck is with the mechanic now and should be ready to give to her on Friday when I get back home. I went with a rebuilt transmission and repairing the blown head gasket and exhaust leak. I will post pictures when it comes home.
Thanks for all the offers to help and to teach me how to DIY. You Guys are the BEST!

----------------------------- 1988 Dodge Raider 2.6L A/T I would've upgraded to a Clearwater head so it won't break in the future. Being down in Florida, the enigne could be more prone to overheat and crack the head. My headgasket leaks right now, its probably what I'll go with. If not, it would be a diesel or turbo engine swap when the 2.6 dies

I have a 84' SWB i live in WI and bought it down in AZ that way there would be no rust. It had 80,000 miles on it I changed all the fluids in it before i left made it to kansas city and the tranny blew. i payed 1600 for the montero i had to rent a uhaul to get it home. then i put another 1200 into a new tranny I didnt have to put as much into it as you will but if there is no rust and your daughter likes it i would finish the project as is cause i love my monte but if the engine goes on it i will be going with a diesel swap. good luck
