Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Gentlemen: So I had a starter motor replaced on my Gen1 1990 Montero two months ago by a reputable mechanic. Since then, the ignition often does not turn over the starter motor when I try to start the truck. Turn the key and nada, zero. It has however, always turned over after 3-4 tries. After looking at the underside of the starter motor, it seemed like the wire from the ignition was poorly connected to the starter - a loose spade fitting. I relaced the fitting, it's plenty tight enough now to always make contact. Anybody got any ideas where I should go from here? Could this be a faulty starter, or a problem with the ignition in the steering column? Problem started AFTER I had the new starter installed.
Thanks! RockDoc

Search for info on the inhibitor switch. Also know as the neutral safety switch. Clean that thing and go from there.

Clean your battery posts and cable really good -- especially if the dash indicator lights are weak and/or the voltmeter isn't registering properly.

If you're positive that this issue started after the starter was replaced, then logic says you got a less than 100% unit. After it clicks and doesn't spin the first time, crawl under and tap on the starter with a hammer while a helper turns and holds the key in the start position for about a 5 count. Do not strike very hard as gear reduction starters don't like the magnet being beaten up. If it turns over after a tap or two, then replace the starter.
Also, it's a good idea to replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch, especially if it's never been done and the part is original. It's a prime culprit for voltage drops which lead to sluggish starts and other weird issues. It's relatively inexpensive and an aftermarket part will work fine.
Fasteddy's advice is occasionally sound...

Motero had the same thing on mine. Cleaned it up and tada, works everytime.

I had the same issue on my raider after replacing the starter. It was a loose spade connector on the starter, replaced it and it hasn't happened again.
