V6 Fuel Pump Repair - did I just make a mistake? #982732 01/27/10 05:21 AM

I'm replacing the outgoing fuel line within the fuel pump assembly, due to a problem with rust.

I treated the fuel assembly with a rust converter, which stabilizes the rust and produces a blue/black color. I then sprayed the assembly with "Cold Galvanize" paint.

I'm wondering -- did I go too far? Is the "Cold Galvanize" paint a bad idea? Should I remove the "Cold Galvanize" paint before I put this assembly back in the tank?

Or will the "Cold Galvanize" be OK inside the fuel tank?

Pictures:

I painted the whole assembly with Rustoleum "Cold Galvanize" spray paint, which produces the gray color you see here.

You can see the new steel gas line and the new 14mm flare fitting.

This is the top of the fuel assembly, showing how the new steel line exits the fuel assembly. I'll seal the gaps around the new line with an epoxy cement. The new outgoing fuel line is longer than the original -- this length was determined by the tubing bender I used.

Royal Brass and Hose took apart the fittings on either end of the rubber fuel line, polished them, and reassembled them on fresh fuel line. Before they were cleaned up, tne fittings on the new fuel line looked like the rusty old line in this photo. The transformation is amazing. I was charged $35.

Get a bucket of gasoline and put the pump assembly in it for a few hours to see what happens.

Don't forget to screw down the pump ground wire to the bracket and make sure the paint doesn't prevent a good ground connection.

Thanks, Frank.
Yesterday I put the assembly in a bucket of fuel to soak. I'll check back on it tomorrow.

Thanks for recommending the test!

The Rustoleum Cold Galvanize spray paint softens when exposed to gasoline. So my next step will be to strip it back off again.

The "Rust Converter" underneath the Cold Galvanize seems unaffected by gasoline.

I'll send an update when I get the Cold Galvanize off.
